Uni students mourn death of life-saving policeman

Students at Shanghai’s Fudan University (FU) held a ceremony yesterday to mourn policeman Zhang Ninghai, who fell to his death while escorting students hiking Mount Huangshan, Anhui Province Monday.

The 18-member Shanghai expeditionary team, of which 10 are students FU, were allegedly in quest of excitement by exploring deep mountain valleys, Guangzhou Daily reported Wednesday.

An unidentified member of the expedition team was quoted as saying that they didn’t buy tickets before entering into the Mount Huangshan area, a world cultural and natural heritage site. He said their purpose in taking the dangerous route wasn’t to dodge paying for the ticket, but that they were excited by the prospect of exploration.

He said they began to plan their route a month before their expedition. “We thought the trip will be safe and never expect we might lose our way,” he told the Guangzhou Daily, adding that they felt deep sorrow for the dead policeman.

According to an unidentified staff member of the Huangshan Mountain Scenery Managing Committee, the place where the 18 members were trapped is the most dangerous part of the mountain, where the local government prohibits unauthorized expeditions.

The Global Times contacted the information office at FU, but received no answer.

“Evading tickets on Huangshan Mountain” brings up 32,900 results on Google. Some of them give concrete route suggestions to evade paying fees. China Radio said the team took the similar route.

Not long ago, the Huangshan Mountain Scenery Managing Committee held a conference, pointing out that with tourists increasingly entering prohibited areas, the mountain face great challenges in fire prevention, environmental management and the safety of tourists.

FU said they will reinforce the guidance in cherishing the life and professional training in expedition rather than totally prohibit association activities, according to the Shanghai Morning Post Wednesday.
